Insurance companies vary in the range of details that they will ask you on application, and it will depend on what specific type of insurance you are applying for. However, quotation forms are generally quite detailed and you will need to have a lot of information to hand. It is important to provide full and correct details because the quotation you will be offered will only be valid if the facts you have given are correct and true. Providing false or misleading information on your application form can only hinder you because in the event of a claim your policy will be annulled. Below is a list of the information that you are likely to be asked to supply:

  • Your name.

  • Your date of birth.

  • The type of property to be insured i.e. flat, semi-detached house or bungalow.

  • Is the property self-contained?

  • How many people live in the property (including children)?

  • When was your house built?

  • What is your occupation?

  • Do you own or rent your property?

  • How many bedrooms are there?

  • Do you have a partner? If so, what is their name, occupation and date of birth?

  • Is your home usually occupied during the daytime hours?

  • Is the property to be insured your main residence or your second home?

  • For what consecutive period of time is the property ever left unoccupied?

  • Do you operate any business activities from home?

  • What is the construction of the building to be insured? Regular home insurance will usually require your home to be built of brick, stone or concrete and roofed with slate, tile, concrete, metal or asphalt. You may also be asked the percentage of flat roof area.

  • What type is the lock on the main entrance to the home?

  • Do you have mortice deadlocks?

  • Are there accessible windows or skylights?

  • Is there a burglar alarm fitted in the property?
  • Do you have a smoke alarm?

  • Are you a member of a neighbourhood watch scheme?

  • What type of cover do you require?

  • Estimated value of contents and building.

  • Have you made any home insurance claims within the last 3 years?
  • Do you live in a high-risk flood area?

  • Has your house been previously damaged by flood?
