Imagine what would be left if the physical body of your house disappeared. What would be left is pretty much what would be covered by contents insurance. Everything from consumables such as food, drink and household goods to the more obvious things like electrical goods, furniture and furnishings can be covered by contents insurance.

Most insurance policies will cover your possessions whilst they are in your home for damage caused by:

  • Accidental damage

  • Fire and smoke

  • Lightning

  • Explosion

  • Theft

  • Malicious damage caused by intruders or vandals

  • Damage caused by flooding and storms

  • Damage caused by water and/or oil from pipes or tanks

  • Escape of oil from fixed heating installations

  • Subsidence or landslip

  • Impact damage by vehicles or animals

  • Damage caused by falling trees or branches
  • Every UK home / contents insurance policy is different but some will include cover for damage to fixed ceramics and glassware and even contents whilst removed on a temporary basis from your home. Check with your insurers or policy for precise details about the contents insurance they offer.

Personal belongings and possessions which you use out of your home, for example, photography or sports equipment or credit cards, can also be covered by extended contents insurance.

    Extended contents insurance policies
Every policy differs in its scope but below are examples of extended or additional UK contents insurance that you can sometimes take out further to your regular contents cover.

    • Alternative accommodation - this will protect you if your home becomes so badly damaged that you are unable to reside there and will pay for the costs of substitute accommodation.
    • Tenants - you can procure a type of insurance that will protect you, the tenant, from your liability for damage to the building or accommodation in which you are dwelling.
    • Legal liability - this will protect you from any legal costs that you, the occupier, might incur from damaging someone's property or injuring someone.
